Yoon Tae-young Tears His Knee

Actor Yoon Tae-young of the “The Legend” fame has torn his knee cartilage during the filming of MBC drama “Strike Love 2009.” Playing the leading character Oh Hye-sung, Yoon was shooting a scene in the baseball drama in which he had to slide into the first base, but he hit the ground with his knee, injuring it severely. Yoon was rushed to the hospital, where an MRI revealed that he needed surgery. However, due to his TV schedule, Yoon has decided to postpone the operation until after the filming wrapped up. He said he will tough it out with pain killers until then. The doctors say that it would take about eight weeks for him to recover from surgery and walk as before.

“Strike Love 2009” is based on the iconic comic book “Alien Baseball Team.” Drawn by highly respected cartoonist Lee Hyun-se, “Alien Baseball Team” is about a squad of misfits, who form a formidable baseball team. The drama also stars Kim Min-jeong as the female lead, Choi Eom-ji.

Kim Beom Leads a New Generation of Hallyu

Actor Kim Beom of the “Boys of Flowers” fame is emerging as a new Hallyu star. His new film “Flight (Korean title Bisang)” has been sold to Japan even before the filming began. Japanese investors, Glory Entertainment and World Apple Corp., purchased the rights to the film’s theater presentation, DVD, and merchandising rights, demonstrating their affection and trust for the young actor. In addition to the film, Kim’s new drama, “Dream,” to be aired later this year has also been sold to Japan, as well as TV shows and movies he formerly appeared in.

If Bae Yong-joon and Choi Ji-woo represented the first generation of Hallyu, Kim Beom is expected to lead the second wave of Korean pop culture in Japan. While the fans of the first Hallyu generation consist largely of homemakers in their 30s and 40s, those for Kim are much younger, from teenagers to women in their 20s.

Kim’s new film “Flight” is about the emotional conflicts experienced during adolescent years. The film is expected to generate positive feedback from Japan, given that it talks about common concerns of young people everywhere. “Flight” is due for release later this year.

Top Star Couple to Wed in Late May

Acclaimed actor Sul Kyung-gu and actress Song Yun-ah announced that they will get married on May 28th at Bangbae Catholic Church in Seoul. Korea’s top celebrities held a press conference on Saturday to talk about their wedding plans.

The two stars first met when they appeared in the 2002 film, “Jail Breaker.” Back then they were just colleagues, but their relationship bloomed after Sul divorced from his wife in 2006. He had been separated from his wife four years prior to the divorce.

At the press conference the couple admitted that it was difficult to get permission from their parents. But after convincing their parents of their sincerity and love for each other, they finally got the parents’ blessing. The couple said that they plan to have at least two children.

Although Sul is a highly respected actor, famous for his roles in the popular “Public Enemy” series, “Silmido,” “Oasis,” and “Peppermint Candy,” his unhappy marriage and subsequent divorce made him a rather unlikely prospect for the husband of much beloved Song. She is known for TV dramas “Hotelier” with Bae Yong-joon and last year’s hit “On Air.”

Korean Stars Come under One Roof in the U.S.

The merger of two major talent agencies in America, William Morris and Endeavor, has brought Korean stars together under one roof. Contracted with William Morris are Singer Rain, actress Kim Yun-jin of the American series “Lost,” Daniel Henney of Korean drama “My Name is Kim Sam-soon,” and director Park Chan-wook of “Old Boy” and “Lady Vengeance.” Now actor Lee Byung-hun of “G.I. Joe” will join these noted Korean celebrities as a member of the newly merged William Morris Endeavor Entertainment.

William Morris is the second largest agency in Hollywood, exerting extensive influence over the entire entertainment business. Endeavor is the fifth largest agency, headed by Ari Emanuel, brother of Ram Emanuel, President Obama’s Chief of Staff. Currently the largest talent agency in the United States is CAA, where famed Koreans film directors Kang Je-gyu of “Swiri”, Kim Ji-woon of “The Good, the Bad, the Weird,” Bong Jun-ho of “The Host,” and Lee Jae-han (a.k.a. John H. Lee) of “Eraser in My Head” belong.

New Daily Morning Drama ‘Love and Obsession’ Begins

KBS2 began airing the new drama “Love and Obsession” from April 20 after it held a ceremony to announce its production on April 17.

Inspired by the true story of a daughter-in-law who abandoned her dementia-stricken mother-in-law on the street, the drama depicts love and hatred in a family centering around a woman (Janghwa) who abandons her mother-in-law and another woman (Hongryeon) who takes care of the abandoned mother-in-law.

Actress Yoon Hae-yeong plays Hongryeon, a good-natured, cheerful single mother, and Kim Se-a plays Janghwa, who seduces Hongryeon’s lover and coerces him to marry her, and who is not satisfied what she owns despite her wealth.

Yoon said, “Hongryeon is very similar to me. I, too, have positive attitude toward life like her.” Fellow actor Choi Jae-won agreed, saying that she seems to feel very comfortable playing the role. The actress added, “Although it is a family drama dealing with the importance of family and overcoming difficulties in life, it is very entertaining, as its story unfolds rather intensely.”

Kim, who made a comeback after a 2 and-a-half year hiatus, said that it was not an easy decision to take the evil role to come back, but she liked the realism of the story.

With regard to concerns that it deals with an extreme subject matter, the drama’s producer said, “It is based on a true story, so it’s not just an extreme case that can’t happen in real life. And what we want to talk about through the drama is the universal values we should not lose, like respect for the elderly and love between family members.”

Veteran actress Yeo Woon-gye is cast as the mother-in-law with dementia, and actor Jang Hyun-sung as Janghwa’s husband. Comedian Kim Jin-woo and comedienne Ahn Sun-young also appear in order to lend humor to the drama. Actress Choi Na-rae, a daughter of actor Choi Jong-won, makes her debut in the drama.

The drama is aired every weekday morning at 9:00 a.m.
